Simon Loynes

Simon P. Loynes works as the annotator of Arabic texts in KITAB Project. Simon holds a PhD in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Edinburgh (2019) and an MA in Islamic Societies and Cultures from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (2014). His doctoral thesis, entitled ‘Revelation in the Qur’an: From Diving Sending Down (tanzīl) to Divine Communication (waḥy)’, demonstrates how the Qur’an understands its own genesis and origins. He is particularly interested in literary approaches to the Qur’an, its place within Late Antiquity, and its engagement with earlier textual traditions. More broadly, he is interested in the historiographical study of Islam and its wide range of literatures. Simon is currently working on the final touches of a monograph edition of his doctoral thesis, as well as annotating Arabic texts for the KITAB project. In future work, he hopes to further explore the relationship between the Qur’an and ancient Arabic poetry. His research can be followed on academia.edu.
